Rush rush, got the yeyo?

Today I made my first journey to Pittsburgh's famous Jerry's Records, a store which has apparently been in operation for over thirty-three years. After browsing their massive record collection, I can see why they are still in business! Vinyl was considered passé for a long time, but there's definitely a niche market for it, and thankfully the people who still love to look at those big-ass sleeves and listen to the music in the store are supporting businesses like these.

I went in with a budget and an empty reusable bag, and I emerged minus $40 and carrying a bag of six LPs, four 12" singles, and two 7" singles. The two 7" singles were $2 each, and the others were all priced between $3 and $5. I could have easily bought most of these on eBay for around the same prices (although in most cases I came out ahead, because I didn't have to pay for shipping), but nothing beats finding a record you have been wanting to buy for ages sitting right there on the shelf in front of you.

I took pictures of my findings to share with you all! Please excuse the drab furnishings:

Photobucket
"Rush Rush" 12" single (Special Extended Remix) - Debbie Harry; "In Love With Love" 12" single - Debbie Harry; "I Want That Man" 12" single - Debbie Harry

Photobucket
Rockbird - Debbie Harry; Def, Dumb & Blonde - Debbie Harry; The Hunter - Blondie; "Island of Lost Souls" 7" single - Blondie; "The Hardest Part" 7" single - Blondie

Photobucket
Dressed to Kill soundtrack - Pino Donaggio; Savage Streets soundtrack - Various Artists; "Show Some Respect" 12" single - Tina Turner; Peter Gabriel (1 - Car) - Peter Gabriel

Yes, I am VERY pleased with my loot. In fact, I didn't even know that "The Hardest Part" was released as a single in the U.S.! (It only reached #84 on the charts, so maybe that's why -- but I love this song.) Now I only have two more Blondie albums to buy on vinyl: their first self-titled album and Plastic Letters. And I have all of Debbie Harry's solo albums except for Debravation. They had some more Debbie 12" singles there, and I'm gonna buy them when I go back. Hopefully making trips to Jerry's will be a weekly thing for me!

P.S. My roommate and her friend are sitting here watching Ferngully. WTF?

Hi everyone! Long time no post.

Actually, I'm not going to write anything of worth today. I just wanted to let you all know about an eBay auction I listed for the out of print DVD of The House on Sorority Row. Click here to look at the listing.

This is the cheapest price you'll find this DVD for right now, so if you are interested, please bid (or buy it now)! I could use the dough. :)

Look at your Last.fm profile and list the top 25 bands/artists you listen to the most, then answer the following questions about them:

(This list is the top 25 bands/artists I have listened to in the past 12 months. I did cheat a little bit, because I skipped over The Beatles... I don't actually like them THAT much, so I have no idea why they were so high on my list.)

1. Blondie
2. Patti Smith
3. Pino Donaggio
4. Nina Simone
5. ABBA
6. Kate Bush
7. Deborah Harry
8. Peter Gabriel
9. Robyn Hitchcock
10. Amy Winehouse
11. The B-52's
12. Madonna
13. Alice Cooper
14. Cyndi Lauper
15. Smith
16. David Bowie
17. Michael Jackson
18. Ramones
19. Duran Duran
20. Ike & Tina Turner
21. Siouxsie and the Banshees
22. Bernard Herrmann
23. Olivia Newton-John
24. Tina Turner
25. Goblin

What was the first song you ever heard by 6? (Kate Bush)
I think it was "Cloudbusting", because [info]nummymuffin sent me a link to the video on YouTube. I didn't fall in love with Kate until a year or two later, though. I was hanging out with [info]adamapple76 one night and he showed me the strange video for "Wuthering Heights" -- THAT is when I fell in love with her. I immediately went home and downloaded every single one of her albums. Now I own most of them on CD. :)

What is your favourite album by 2? (Patti Smith)
Horses, no doubt. It's a masterpiece in my eyes -- one of the greatest albums of all-time. Every song on it is gold!

What is your favourite lyric that 1 has sung? (Blondie)
"Die young, stay pretty
Live fast, 'cause it won't last"

How many times have you seen 11 live? (The B-52's)
0, unfortunately. :(

What is your favorite song by 7? (Deborah Harry)
"The Jam Was Moving".

What is a good memory you have involving 20? (Ike & Tina Turner)
Listening to "A Fool in Love" in my dad's car whenever he would pick me up for the weekend when I was a kid. Okay, it wasn't REALLY Ike & Tina Turner... it was a pale imitation in the form of the What's Love Got to Do With It soundtrack, but it's a good memory!

Is there a song by 3 that makes you sad? (Pino Donaggio)
Yes: "Contest Winners" from the Carrie soundtrack. Just thinking about what is going to happen to that girl after the song is finished playing breaks my heart. :(

What is your favorite song by 19? (Duran Duran)
Definitely "Planet Earth". What a kickass song!

How did you first get into 22? (Bernard Herrmann)
I've been a fan of Psycho ever since I was a little kid, and I always loved the soundtrack. When I got into Hitchcock's other films I realized what a brilliant composer Herrmann was.

What is your favorite song by 4? (Nina Simone)
"Do What You Gotta Do". It was my favorite ever since I heard it for the first time, and it always will be. What a beautiful, emotional song.

Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad? (Peter Gabriel)
"Here Comes the Flood"... especially the piano version from Shaking the Tree.

What is your favorite album of 15? (Smith)
Well, since they only had two albums, I guess I have to go with A Group Called Smith. It's mostly covers, but they're all really fucking good. Especially "Baby It's You", which is one of my favorite songs of all-time.

How many times have you seen 5 live? (ABBA)
None. Unfortunately, they aren't together anymore.

What is your favorite album by 12? (Madonna)
Erotica. The album isn't nearly as dirty as you think it will be -- but it's still a great album filled with some amazing pop songs. (I defy you not to dance while listening to "Deeper and Deeper"!)

What is a good memory you have involving 10? (Amy Winehouse)
I don't know. I sang "You Know I'm No Good" one time for karaoke. Does that count?

What was the first song you heard by 18? (Ramones)
I dunno, probably "Blitzkrieg Bop".

What is your favorite song by 17? (Michael Jackson)
"Thriller". I have an unhealthy obsession with that song. :(

What is your favorite album by 16? (David Bowie)
I actually haven't heard enough of his albums yet to make a good decision on this yet (working on it!), but so far I like Heroes the best.

How many of your top 25 have you seen live?
Just one: Robyn Hitchcock. And that was last Monday! :D

3. Peter Gabriel 3 (Melt)
4. Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
5. Blondie - Eat to the Beat
6. Blondie - Blondie
7. Blondie - The Hunter
8. Peter Gabriel 4 (Security)
9. Kate Bush - Never For Ever
10. Nina Simone - Wild Is the Wind
11. Patti Smith - Easter
12. ABBA - The Album
13. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

16. Patti Smith - Wave
17. Deborah Harry - KooKoo
18. Kate Bush - The Dreaming
19. Duran Duran - Duran Duran
20. Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains

I decided not to include soundtracks, because they would probably take up my whole list. (Maybe I will do a separate list for those someday.)

Oh, and I thought I would update you guys on the Robyn Hitchcock concert. I e-mailed the manager of Club Cafe and she told me Robyn Hitchcock will not be playing there -- which means that the people who run his website were mistaken, and the concert is still on at the New Hazlett Theater. YAY! :D

So apparently my mom and her boyfriend didn't vote for Obama, because her boyfriend's sister told them Obama is the antichrist. Nice.

On top of that, I wake up to learn the Robyn Hitchcock concert (which I already bought tickets for) on November 17th has changed venues... to a 21+ bar.

I quit.

Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test...

Balanced, Secure, and Realistic.

20 Impressionist, -2 Islamic, 15 Ukiyo-e, -12 Cubist, -18 Abstract and -6 Renaissance!

Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Impressionist paintings are balanced, use colored shadows, use pure color, broken brushstrokes, thick paint, and scenes from everyday life or nature.

People that like Impressionist paintings may not alway be what is deemed socially acceptable. They tend to move on their own path without always worrying that it may be offensive to others. They value friendships but because they also value honesty tend to have a few really good friends. They do not, however, like people that are rude and do not appreciate the ideas of others. They are secure enough in themselves that they can listen to the ideas of other people without it affecting their own final decisions. The world for them is not black and white but more in shades of grey and muted colors. They like things to be aestically pleasing, not stark and sharp. There are many ways to view things, and the impresssionist personality views the world from many different aspects. They enjoy life and try to keep a realistic viewpoint of things, but are not very open to new experiences. If they are content in their live they will be more than likely pleased to keep things just the way they are.

'Tis the season for scary movies. Some rank The Evil Dead as the best horror film of all time. What is your favorite scary movie?

View 500 Answers

People rank The Evil Dead as the best horror film of all-time? Really?? It's a good movie, don't get me wrong, but is it really better than every other horror film out there? You're entitled to your own opinion, but I certainly don't think so. (Though I do think The Evil Dead is the best movie from that series, and Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness are incredibly overrated.)

As for my favorite horror film, most of you probably already know the answer -- Carrie. I've had some people argue with me that it isn't a horror film. Well, they can shove it, because it's a horror film. It might be more on the dramatic side for the first half, but if there's a girl killing people with telekinesis, yeah, I'm pretty sure it's horror. You don't see Matilda anywhere, do you?

To me, Carrie is the most perfect film ever made. I have a hard time explaining why I feel the way I do, but there's just something about the film that clicks with me. I suppose the clichéd answer is that I connect to the character of Carrie White on a personal level, but that doesn't begin to cover the depths of my love for the film. I love that De Palma isn't afraid to drag his sequences out. The main titles, the prom sequence, and the ending -- three of my favorite scenes in any film ever -- are all in gorgeous slow motion. Another clichéd thing to say about your favorite film is that you wouldn't change a frame of it. Well, I would. If I could change one thing about the film, I would reinsert the scene between Sue Snell (Amy Irving) and Chris Hargenson (Nancy Allen), and the sex scene with Sue and Tommy Ross (William Katt), but unfortunately these scenes are thought to be lost. I love the exchanges between the students, and I feel there's a lack of that in the film as we know it. But otherwise, it's perfect.

I mention this movie so much both online and in real life that I'm sure my friends are all quite sick of it by now. In fact, I'm forcing some friends of mine to watch it in a horror marathon I am planning the day before Halloween. I think I will show Halloween, Carrie, and Suspiria, although I'm not too sure about the last one, because I don't want them to laugh at it (as people invariably do when they see an old foreign horror film).

And for those of you at home playing a drinking game: Perfect. *pops tab, guzzles beer*

Top 40 Patti Smith Songs
"flat as a board and needs a screw"
[info]polyester_queen
http://www.last.fm/user/RyanPC/journal/2008/09/12/25svig_top_40_patti_smith_songs

This was probably the most difficult list I've compiled thus far. I spent a few hours mulling over Patti Smith's discography, trying to decide the order in which to place my favorite tracks, and it was nearly impossible. God didn't help me, I can tell you that. Of all the artists I am obsessed with, Patti Smith is probably the most consistent as far as the quality of her work in her early period (1974-1979) versus her later period (1988-present). My top ten is mostly comprised of tracks from her early period (except for a brilliant cover of R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" that is far better than the original), but that doesn't mean her current work isn't just as great. In fact, her voice has matured over the years, and the raspy quality it has now is so soothing. I like to consider Patti Smith the white rocker equivalent of Nina Simone -- she is a poet and a goddess, and she can take any song and make it her own (check out her cover album, Twelve, for proof of that!). Of course, praise must also go to her band, including the brilliant guitarist Lenny Kaye, who has stuck by Patti through her whole career. Their sound is still as fresh as it was thirty-five years ago.

I wrote this letter to the editor today (with a little help from my friends, heh heh) and sent it to several papers:

I'm not usually interested in politics, but when John McCain called on Sarah Palin to be his vice president, I stood up and took notice. It was obvious to me right from the beginning that this is purely a gimmick to get votes from supporters of Hillary Clinton. McCain met this woman once before he chose her -- I wouldn't allow someone I only met once to borrow a DVD, let alone take on a job like vice president that is crucial in this election.

The point of my letter is that there are far more important things to talk about than Palin's abstinence-failed daughter, which is all the media's been doing. John McCain is 72 years old, and there is a good chance his cancer might return, leaving us with Sarah Palin as our nation's leader. Do we really want someone whose longest job was as mayor of 7,000 people to be a 72 year old heartbeat away from the presidency?

McCain is bad enough, but I know I would not want a president who supports censorship, who wants abstinence-only education and creationism to be taught in schools, who is anti-abortion even in cases of rape or incest, and who believes that the war in Iraq is somehow God's responsibility. Palin sued the government to get polar bears taken off the endangered species list so she could drill in ANWR, she left Wasilla twenty million dollars in debt, and on top of everything else, there's a possibility that she is an unpatriotic secessionist -- she wants Alaska to be separate from the United States. She also fired a librarian in her hometown of Wasilla, because the librarian was opposed to the idea of banning books. We live in the 21st century, folks. Doesn't Palin have better things to do than keep others from learning?

Voters, don't be fooled. Every single person in this country should feel insulted by John McCain's choice for vice president. Republicans love to point out the "inexperience" of Barack Obama, but McCain has chosen someone with far less experience as a running mate. Heck, she doesn't even know that "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in the 1950s, and she thinks it was written by our founding fathers! The media loves to tout Palin as some kind of a maverick reformer, but she hasn't really accomplished anything. Before McCain made his announcement, most people who are into politics hadn't even heard of Sarah Palin. Apparently, the more you repeat a lie, the more people believe it.

And speaking of lies, why did Palin lie to the American public in her speech last night? She said that she would be a friend to special needs kids, but she actually slashed funding to Alaska's special needs programs by 62%. That's no friend -- she sounds more like a sworn enemy to me!
EDIT: Turns out to be untrue.

Why on earth would John McCain choose a running mate with about twenty different scandals brewing? Are we sure he isn't actively trying to lose?

In between obsessing over lists of my favorite songs by my favorite artists, I have been thinking a lot about the upcoming election. Now, I can't say I have ever had an overwhelming interest in politics, and those of you who read my LJ regularly know that I very rarely, if ever, get political here. However, there's something that has been on my mind, and that is of course John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin for Vice President. It is quite obvious to me (and it should be obvious to everyone) that this is simply a ploy to get the votes of angry Hillary supporters. I won't go into detail about why Palin is such a dangerous choice for Vice President, because my friend [info]nummymuffin has already done such a brilliant job of that on her LJ. If you aren't already going to vote for Obama, this entry alone should be enough to convince you.

Keep in mind, John McCain is 72 years old. If he becomes president, he might very well die in office, and then who will we be stuck with as president? A Pentecostal hockey mom who is going to destroy this country.

I have 389 Nina Simone songs in my iTunes jukebox -- and that's not even close to her entire discography -- so I think it is safe to say that she was one of the most prolific artists around. She was one of the few artists who could cover any song and make it her own, often surpassing the original. She had perhaps the most soulful voice of all-time, and you believed every word that came out of her mouth. Okay, enough gushing. Ms. Simone's music speaks for itself. Here is my list:
